Cool Tools.

Have you read Kevin Kelly's Cool Tools? It's a blog of neat-o stuff, written at first by Kevin Kelly (one of the Whole Earth Catalog originals) himself and now by a whole team of thoughtful individuals.

Okay, okay, so I only bring this up because I saw this photo from The Aviation Instructor's Handbook:

What a dick!

Update: There's going to be a Whole Earth talk at Stanford on Thursday, November 9th, with several panelists from the early days, including Kevin Kelly.

\m|/ PANDORA ROCKS \|m/

I think I've posted about Pandora before -- it's a great and free music service that not only plays the music you know, but also suggests other music you might like. And it's pretty good. It's replaced my use of radio, MP3s, even the regular streams I used to listen to at work. Commercial free, no DJs. It's like satellite radio at your desk, except customized.

What you do is enter the name of a song or artist you like, which then becomes the seed for Pandora's suggestion engine. That song also becomes a "station" that you can return to, and also send to others to have a listen. They've even created some blog-compatible sidebar modules that let you share your stations and bookmarked songs, which I've just installed. Feel free to suggest stuff for me to listen to, in the little forms underneath each one.

There's a whole lot of nerdosity behind this, but also some non- computer geek expert knowledge: the recommendations come via characterizations of each song, made by professional musicians. And it's all wrapped up in a smallish Flash player that you can load in a webpage or stick on your desktop as a widget.

Snakes on a Tribe.

I'm at Barnes & Noble and I pass the "In the Media" table, and what do I see but a Snakes on a Plane movie guide. I pick it up and what do I see on the first page that I flip to? A SoaP tribe -- complete with a screenshot and some text about it.

Snakes on a Tribe. Snakes on a Tribe. Snakes on a Tribe.

From the book:

A dedicated traveler on the information superhighway, Medusa first learned about the existence of Snakeson a Plane on one of the several messageboards she keeps tabs on. And, after doing some research and figuring out the movie was the real deal, she created her own "SoaP"-dedicated space on Tribe.net, a service that builds Web-based communities through friends near and far. But Medusa's site wasn't simply to pay heed to the "Snakes" experience. No, her plan goes one step further than that. She wants to develop a movement that will have people attend the first screenings of the movie... in groups... dressed like snakes.

...

As of mid-june, she has forty-one signed-on members of her Tribe, including people she didn't even know. And while she has no idea how many of them, or how many more, will go all-in on this experiment in fun, she feels a responsibility to make it as easy as possible for those who want to take part to do just that. Accordingly, Medusa plans to introduce a section that will offer costume advice.

Camera 0, Amazon 3.

Camera 0, Amazon 3. Camera 0, Amazon 3.

The Casio Exilim EX-S500 is proof of two things: the fragility of slim-obsessed design, and the robustness of Amazon's customer service. With the return of this particular digital camera, we will have sent back 3 of these feature-laden devices, with no questions asked:

  • EX-S500 #1: single dead pixel noticed on second day. Amazon replaces at no charge.
  • EX-S500 #2: photos appear washed out after 6 weeks. Amazon replaces at no charge.
  • EX-S500 #3: lens retracts halfway after 2 months (shown above). Amazon refunds full purchase price.

We'll be getting a different camera this time around, probably a Canon. But you can bet that we'll be getting it from Amazon.

Sure going to miss that Casio battery life, though.

Sister Furong is So Hot Right Now.

China is trying to shut down its first internet superstar! Furong JieJie ("Sister Hibiscus") got her start retaliating against two Chinese universities that rejected her -- by plastering their messageboards with suggestive photos of herself. Well, suggestive by local standards, anyway.

Dig the scrolling photos on the fan site. I love the hawt captions ("I_am_cute," "WoodNymph," "Famous'S'Body," etc.).

Yahoo has the background.

So Rad.

I just found these pictures on tribe. Looks like this couple dressed up like 30s gangsters and went out for a night (and day) on the town in Las Vegas. Or maybe they got married in Vegas and these are their wedding photos.

Matters of Style and Substance.

Okay, so we're test-launching something I've wanted to do for a while now: styles. If you're among 1000 of the Chosen, you'll see a new Edit Style tab on your profile (or a link to convert to your profile so you'll see all the tabs). This tab shows you a small library of 9 styles designed by yours truly and coded by the uncommonly patient and detail-oriented Pete Butler, with some help from Victor Barclay.

Pick a style and see how it fits your profile. (You're currently looking at Turbulence, which features some striking fluid dynamics imagery from the Catrakis lab at UC Irvine.)

Also, check out some of the new modules we've added to your Add Modules tab. If you are publishing a blog somewhere other than tribe, you can stream it into your profile as a module -- presto! More audience for your witty notions. The one I think will really be a hit is the Recent Activity module, which is a running list of the newest stuff you've created on tribe -- discussion posts, blog entries, whatever you want to share with your friends and, uh, stalkers. We've also added some basic modules, like one for making lists, and the often-requested Free Text module.

Anyway, check the Release Notes tribe for the full scoop. This release represents a lot of 1337 technology that we've been working on for a while, and I think it's pretty solid.

Oh yeah, and for those of you who have been wondering about the Profile Design Contest: we've decided to relaunch the thing and give people a template and some more time to work their magic. Hopefully the new style library will give people more ideas.
